How the hill works

Vidigal sits on the south-west slope of Morro Dois Irmãos, between Leblon and São Conrado. Avenida Niemeyer runs along the sea at its foot. From Praça do Vidigal, where the avenue meets the hill, Avenida Presidente João Goulart climbs about 2 km to the Arvrão, the area at the top where Bar da Laje and Mirante do Arvrão are.

The main road carries the moto-taxis, the kombi vans, the delivery bikes and most of the small shops. Off it, stairways and alleys (the becos) connect the houses; on the map they are the dotted brick-colored lines. Expect steps and slopes everywhere, and allow for them when you plan a walk with luggage or small children.

Moto-taxis and kombis wait at the bottom, by the square, and run to the top for about R$10 a ride. The Dois Irmãos trail starts beside the soccer field at Vila Olímpica Adílio, near the top of the hill. The beach is at the bottom, below the Sheraton, reached by a public staircase from the avenue.

Habits that help

  • Carry some cash. Many small places also take Pix, the Brazilian instant payment, but not every counter takes cards.
  • Ask before you photograph people or their homes. The views are for everyone; the doorways are someone's house.
  • Check the hours on Instagram before you go up the hill for a bar or a restaurant. Programs change week to week, especially on weekends.

Questions about the guide

Is everything in this guide still open?
We list a place only when we found evidence from 2024 to 2026 that it operates: its own recent posts, current listings or news. Hours change often, so check the place's Instagram on the day you go.
Why are so few restaurants named?
Vidigal has many small bars, bakeries and snack counters on the main road, and most have no website. Several that appear on public maps closed years ago. Rather than send you to a closed door, we describe the main road as a whole and let Bruno point you to his current favorites.
How do I get to the top of the hill?
Take a moto-taxi or a kombi from the stand by Praça do Vidigal on Avenida Niemeyer, about R$10 a ride in late 2025, or walk about 2 km uphill on Avenida Presidente João Goulart.
Can I walk to the beach?
Yes. Praia do Vidigal is at the bottom of the hill, below the Sheraton, down a public staircase of about 140 steps from Avenida Niemeyer. Leblon beach starts about 1 km east along the avenue.
