Bar da Laje

Rooftop bar and restaurant at the top of Vidigal, open since 2014, with a view over Leblon and Ipanema. Samba and pagode on weekend afternoons; feijoada, bar snacks and drinks. On some days there is an entry charge that depends on who is playing.

Where: Rua Armando de Almeida Lima 8, next to Mirante do Arvrão
When: Afternoons and evenings; weekends are busiest. Hours change, so check @bardalaje first.

Mirante do Arvrão

Hotel, bar and restaurant at the top of the hill, next to Bar da Laje. The terrace looks over the South Zone beaches. The kitchen serves feijoada, bar food, seafood and pasta, and weekends bring samba and pagode. A natural lunch stop after the Dois Irmãos hike.

Alto Vidigal

Bar, lounge and event venue near the top of the hill, known for its parties and its view over the South Zone. Daytime samba events, night parties and a New Year's Eve party with a view of the Copacabana fireworks. Entry and prices depend on the event.

Start of the trail

Dois Irmãos trailhead

The trail to the Dois Irmãos summit starts at the soccer field beside Vila Olímpica Adílio, at the top of Vidigal. Residents collect a small contribution here, R$10 per person in late 2025. Go in daylight and carry water: there is none on the trail.

Length: About 1.5 km each way, roughly an hour up
Cost: A resident-collected contribution, about R$10
Getting there: Moto-taxi from the bottom, about five minutes

Dois Irmãos summit

The top of Irmão Maior, the taller of the two peaks, about 533 m above the sea. The view takes in Leblon, Ipanema and the lagoon to the east and Pedra da Gávea and São Conrado to the west. Some rocky stretches near the top have no railings.

Time: About an hour up from the trailhead, less coming down
Best time: Early morning or late afternoon; be down before dark
Bring: Water, sunscreen, repellent, proper shoes

Mirante do Leblon

A free public viewpoint on Avenida Niemeyer at the end of Leblon beach: a deck on the rocks looking back along Leblon and Ipanema. Busy at sunset. It sits about 900 m from the Vidigal entrance, along the avenue.

The beach below the hill

Praia do Vidigal

A small public beach, about 300 m long, below Avenida Niemeyer in front of the Sheraton Grand Rio. Unless you are a hotel guest, you reach it by a public staircase of about 140 steps from the avenue. The hotel shades much of the sand from early afternoon.

The west end of Leblon

Leblon beach

The western end of Leblon beach begins just past Mirante do Leblon, about 1 km from the Vidigal entrance along Avenida Niemeyer. From here the sand runs east into Ipanema.

Getting there: A walk along Avenida Niemeyer, or a short bus or Uber ride

São Conrado beach

The long beach west of Vidigal, also called Praia do Pepino at its eastern end, where hang gliders and paragliders from Pedra Bonita come down to land. About 2 km from the Vidigal entrance.

Theatre group · since 1986

Nós do Morro

The theatre and film group founded in Vidigal in 1986 by actor Guti Fraga and collaborators. Its 80-seat Teatro do Vidigal opened in 1996. Former students include the actors Babu Santana, Roberta Rodrigues, Thiago Martins and Juan Paiva.

Praça do Vidigal tiles

The small square at the entrance to Vidigal is covered in hand-painted blue and green tiles by the Belgian artist Françoise Schein, unveiled in 2001. They show a map of the community with poems by Vinícius de Moraes and Manoel de Barros, and they are the first stretch of her Human Rights Path in Rio.

Sports complex at the top

Vila Olímpica Adílio

The municipal sports complex at the top of the hill, renamed in August 2024 after Adílio, the Flamengo player. It serves residents; for visitors it is the landmark for the start of the Dois Irmãos trail, which leaves from beside its soccer field.

Up the hill in five minutes

Moto-taxis and kombis

Moto-taxis and shared kombi vans wait beside Praça do Vidigal and run up the main road to the top of the hill. About R$10 a ride in late 2025. Agree the fare before you get on; kombis leave when they are full.

Bus stops

Two bus stops on Avenida Niemeyer at Praça do Vidigal: the one on the square's side for São Conrado and the West Zone, the one across the road for Leblon and the rest of the South Zone. Lines change often, so check Moovit or Google Maps on the day.

The nearest Metro station, on Line 4 in Leblon, about 1.6 km in a straight line from the Vidigal entrance. Line 4 runs east to General Osório in Ipanema, where it meets Line 1 for Copacabana and the city centre.

Clínica da Família

The public family-health clinic that opened in March 2026 at Rua Doutor Olinto de Magalhães 53, with consultations, vaccinations, dentistry and a pharmacy for its patients. In an emergency, call 192 for an ambulance.

Zona Sul supermarket

A branch of the Rio supermarket chain Zona Sul on Rua Dias Ferreira in Leblon, about 1.4 km from the Vidigal entrance. Directory listings say it is open 24 hours; confirm before a late run.

About this map

How it was made

The streets, stairways, buildings and the trail come from OpenStreetMap, the volunteer map of the world. The shading of the hills comes from the Copernicus elevation model. We drew both in the colors of the house, so the brick of Vidigal reads as brick.

What is on it, and what is not

We pinned a place only when we found recent evidence that it is operating: its own posts, current listings or news from 2024 to 2026. Vidigal also has dozens of small bars, bakeries, snack counters, pharmacies and shops along Avenida Presidente João Goulart, the main road up the hill. Many of them have no website, and some of the ones on the public map closed years ago, so they are not pinned. Walk up the main road and you will pass them, or ask Bruno which ones he likes this month.

Where the apartment is

The shaded circle marks the part of the hill the apartment is in, based on the approximate location Airbnb shows for the listing. The exact address and the directions for the last few metres come with the booking.

Getting up the hill

The main road climbs from Avenida Niemeyer to the Arvrão at the top, about 2 km. Moto-taxis and kombi vans wait at the bottom, by Praça do Vidigal, and cost about R$10 a ride. The alleys and stairways, the dotted lines on the map, are how residents move between the streets.
